From dance moves, glow sticks to a Garfield hand puppet, Wednesday night featured the recording artist Danny Brown’s continuation of his Stardust Tour, starting earlier this month. After a hardcore set from femtanyl, a Toronto-based artist, the crowd engagement proved to be a force that would drive the remainder of the show. The next artist, underscores, knew exactly what the audience needed as a native of California, as she maintained the high energy. For part of her performance, she carried a warm-colored tube light as the stage lights remained dim with a hint of smoke to establish what can be described as a mysterious aura, keeping people highly intrigued. With the conclusion of her act, there was a question everyone had in mind, what will Danny do?
As the echoes of the crowd began intensifying, the lights seemed to lower in response, which included the well-received surprise of Danny walking up to perform his first song of the night, “Starburst”. He reinforced his vibrant character with attire featuring green dyed hair, a fur jacket, jeans, and sequin sneakers. After performing a few songs featured on his recent project from this year, Stardust, he took the crowd back into his XXX era with the tracks “Lie4” and “I Will”. He continued this journey into his catalog by playing the crowd favorite “Smokin & Drinkin”. How many blunts in total were smoked is an uncertainty, but at least , but at least the crowd walked out knowing the correct order to smoke and drink. He would transition into the next song showing his appreciation for the audience saying “that’s what the fuck I’m talking about Los Angeles!”.
A few songs later, Danny Brown displayed his strong breath control with “When It Rain” and “Ain’t It Funny” from his 2016 project Atrocity Exhibition, setting the scene for the title track of SCARING THE HOES. The dynamic changed suddenly with Danny Brown’s cover of the Jane Remover song “Psychoboost”, feeling as if The Bellwether was hosting an underground rave, an unexpected but appreciated plot twist. He would later bring the openers femtanyl and underscores back out to perform their features on Stardust.
Danny then debuted the songs “Right From Wrong”, “What You See”, and the “Book of Daniel”, bringing out NNAMDÏ then Quadeca, finishing the night with an emotional turn that brought the fans closer than before. Preceding the live debut for “Book of Daniel”, his final song before he left the stage, Danny commanded that everyone made some “motherfucking noise” for all of the artists who contributed to the show. He also talked about his creative strategy for putting songs together while he was working with Quadeca before Stardust’s release. Danny mentioned how he would leave a beat playing overnight and finish the track in his sleep, reminding the audience that the hunger from when he was an aspiring recording artist never left him, further emphasized by him sharing how he continues having much to learn when it comes to music as a medium of his artistic expression. Once the stage was clear, the crowd began to chant “one more song,” showing their desire to extend the thrill they felt from the electric performances.
When the fans realized the show was over, there wasn’t a feeling of disappointment from its completion, rather a feeling of gratitude for the great night at The Bellwether that Wednesday. It would be the perfect start heading into Thanksgiving weekend. Danny Brown will continue his Stardust Tour today, November 28th, at the Observatory in Orange County, CA.
